A Comfort Snuggle

Sunday, April 5, 2009

I wrote when Ellie was sick that one of the things I really liked was how she let us hold her and rock her to sleep.  Well it turns out that it wasn't a sick thing.  She lets us hold her and sing to her while she lays her head on our shoulder and falls asleep.  After 9 months of not letting us snuggle her you can understand why we take advantage of these moments.

Today, she wasn't interested in falling asleep on our shoulder so we just put her down to let her cry herself to sleep.  After 10 minutes she was still crying and was crying her scary cry (not much breathing, really angry, etc.  She only does this every once in a while when she is really sad) so I went in and I picked her up.  It was really sad.

She laid her head on my shoulder and stopped crying but she was still really worked up and was doing that thing babies do after they cry where they breath in or something and it shakes their whole body.  Does that make sense?  I don't know what it's called when they do that.  Anyways, as soon as she settled down, and with her head on my shoulder, she let out a sweet little "Dada, Dada"  and then fell asleep.

MELTED MY HEART, AGAIN.

While she slept on my shoulder I thought about how sweet she is and has been for the last few months.  I love how she says Dada when she sees me walk in.  I love how she crawls all over us and touches my face.  I thought about how sad it is to see her sad and to hear her when she's really crying.

I thought about all the times I will get to comfort her with a hug when she is sad.  I hope she'll let me do this during every stage of her life.  I don't look forward to the sadness she will experience from physical, emotional and spiritual pain during her life.  Its hard to imagine little Ellie in so much pain.

I'm grateful for families and the support they provide.  I'm lucky to have a great wife who does so much for our family, and for parents who care so much about us.  I love being a dad.  It's my favorite thing right now.  Ellie brings so much joy as she continues to learn new things and show more and more affection for Marci and I.

Thanks Ellie for being part of our family.

New Words

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

One of my favorite things is when Ellie learns new things.  Recently she's started trying to say a lot of new words.  She now says:

Mama
Dada
Duck
Mimi
Jeff
Baaaaa (like a sheep)
Baby
Grandma - only one time

It's pretty awesome and it makes me so proud.  The words we're working on now are Monkey, Ellie, & Touchdown.

Leaf Eater

Sunday, March 8, 2009

My new favorite thing is playing outside with Ellie.  It's so funny to put her down on the grass bare foot and watch her figure out what that prickly sensation is.  Of course she always figures out that it is a good thing and proceeds to romp around the yard eating every leaf in her path. She especially likes the cart in the yard that holds the garden hose.  Every time she sees it she starts racing over to climb on it.  I never let her of course because I don't want to have to change her clothes after they get all dirty from it.

Being outside feels so good when it's warm and sunny.  It makes the day go by so much faster, everyone is way happier and Ellie loves it.  She loves the little baby playground swings and just laughs while I push her.  It's hilarious.

What's the deal with March?  It's like 65 one day, and the next day I wake up and everything is covered in snow?  Irritating.  Plus the new car is black and even though I wash it every week it always looks filthy from the little storms.

I can't wait for summer to get here, and for a California winter
 next year.

*Funny story.  Last time I played outside with Ellie she was on a
roll eating leaves as fast as possible before I could grab them from her.  After we had been back inside the house for about 45 minutes she spit out this little brown thing.  After investigating the little surprise package that came from her mouth, turns out IT WAS A LEAF!  It was all folded into a nice little bundle and she had been storing it in her mouth for almost an hour.  Funny little girl.

My Favorites

Saturday, February 7, 2009

One of my favorite things that Ellie does is look at me with her big eyes and adorable smile, and then reach out and touch my face ever so gently, and then eject her claws and try to shred my face off.

Oh man, it's the best.
